Bullying was rife

Bullying was rife while I worked in Scotland. I’ve seen junior doctors pinned up against the wall by more senior staff because of the most ridiculous reasons. On one occasion I saw one poor young man grabbed by his collar and slapped because he had forgotten a pen. I saw a female junior doctor belittled […]

If I don’t, who will?

The vast majority of my adult life has been in care. There are times when I definitely feel like I’ve had enough and can’t do it anymore. But I always find myself in the same position of thinking that if I throw in the towel after all these years, how can I expect other people […]

Burnt Out

One shift there was two nurses, two HCA’s and a student for 33 patients. If patients didn’t get washed they didn’t get washed. As long as they were fed and meds were done we were happy. It was awful. This isn’t the only day it happened.

’What do you want me to do about it?’

Having HALF the amount of nursing staff we are meant to have on shift and telling the clinical nurse manager (in charge of staffing) that this is unsafe and we need help and their reply being ’what do you want me to do about it’

Refusing to pay the pay rise.

I have recently left my position as a CBT therapist within an IAPT service. We have had no CPD for 2 years. Even though we are forced to be accredited and lie about our CPD. (We pay for this) This is on top of an ever increasing case load. No quality supervision and being pushed […]

Work life balance became a ticking timebomb for my mental health

I loved my role and caring for all of the patients but the work life balance became a ticking timebomb for my mental health. The workloads and shifts, in particular, night shifts are fine when they’re once every so often, but 4 in a row is just not healthy. The increase in workload due to […]

While I’ve been at work I’ve…

..been sworn at I’ve been swung for. I’ve been spat at. I’ve been pissed on. I’ve been called all the names under the sun. All this seemed to be par for the course, not just for doctors, but for all healthcare workers. TikTok: @drmichaelsays

Abuse of power, lack of respect, robbing people of their dignity and autonomy. I have experienced or witnessed most, if not all of these.

When asked to reflect on why healthcare is struggling to recruit and retain, the issue I have is not writer’s block. Its…whatever the opposite of that is. An excess of things to say, a surfeit of stories. I have been involved in advocating for culture change for nearly a decade now and my repository of […]
